A recent article from the January/February issue of the American Pharmceutical Review highlighted the efficacy of Spray Drying and Rotary Evaporation as methods of preparation of Amorphous Solid Dispersions (ASDs). Rotary evaporation and spray drying are both effective techniques for ASDs; rotary evaporation provides a quick, cost effective and widely available process while spray drying can be scaleable for either discovery and early stage or later stage manufacturing and commercialization parts of the process.
Amorphous solid dispersions have increased in popularity with pharmaceutical companies due to the issues with poorly soluble drugs. It is understood the percentage of drug candidates limited by this poor solubility issue is rising.
Amorphous solid dispersions are attractive for poorly soluble drug candidates because they provide many of the advantages of more conventional solid oral dosage forms, but also allow for faster dissolution rates and higher drug concentrations..
